About the Speaker
Mrs Sylvia Mun graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Social Science, Social Work (Hons) in 1992 and a Master in Social Science (Social Work) in 2006. She started her career as a Medical Social Work in
Tan Tock Seng Hospital. In 1997, she joined the newly specialized KK Women & Children’s Hospital and pioneered the Pediatrics social work service. In 2000, she was appointed Chief Medical Social Worker.
As the Head of Department, she has had experiences overseeing the running of both the women and children’s medical social work service, which includes counseling for rape victims, abortions, young mothers, gynecological and breast
cancer patients and families, babies born prematurely or with abnormalities; management of patients newly diagnosed with chronic, acute or life threatening illnesses, children brought in for investigation of non-accidental injuries, and death and
dying of children.
Together with her team of social workers and Singapore International Foundation, Sylvia led a team to Buds of Christ to equip the agency with skills on case management for HIV women and children in Namakkal District, Tiruchengode, India
over a period of 3 years. In 2008, Sylvia was conferred the National Day Award, Commendation Medal. In 2010, she was awarded the Outstanding Social Worker Award, and in 2011, she won the Singapore Women’s Weekly Great Women of our Time award
(Education and Public Service).
Sylvia is currently pursuing her PhD (Social Work) full time under the KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital scholarship and NMRC Research Training Fellowship. Her research is on understanding grief experiences of bereaved mothers.
